So I've identified some of the problems people are having is related to 
64bit debian.

Basically, 64bit Ubuntu has libssl0.9.8 and libssl1.0.0 available, but 
64bit Debian (stable) doesn't, it only has libssl0.9.8. Coova Chilli was 
compiled for libssl1.0.0 so doesn't get updated, causing problems. I'll 
try and do a compilation shortly with it depending on libssl0.9.8 
instead. I'm also in the process of checking what newer debian supports, 
and it appears to also have both 0.9.8 and 1.0.9
