One can also use apt-get to download the sources on a Debian 7 system, and build a new package. The new built package will then support Debian 7.

I usually add a "deb-src" repo in the sources.list in order to get the sources, using "apt-get source package".
I do that when I need to rebuild for the new libssl for Debian 7, that the official package doesn't support yet. Then I install the new package using gdebi, which resolves dependencies.
