Is it possible to recover the accounts, or must they just be recreated?

Yes. Expired accounts are deleted after they have been expired for 2 months. The historic data though is kept (monthly totals, not per session totals).

AFAIK, that is normal behavior it deletes expired accounts from the interface every two months IIRC.
But they are not deleted from MySQL, a search on the forum can confirm it.
