Hi, 
I use the latest debian (i386) Jessie desktop version,  with gnome, additional I use xfce4 for xrdp sessions. This runs not on a high end server more than an old netbook, a Asus eee pc 1001P (Intel Atom 1,66 GHz, 2 GB RAM). I use the LAN port for the WAN connection and for the LAN connection I use the WLAN card (driver:nl80211), directly as hotspot with hostapd.  Maybe there is the problem.
