2500 concurent users is serious project on several ways. One of them is 
security as well.

In technical sense the most critical hardware point are network interfaces.

I would suggest to read some information from here: 
https://www.pfsense.org/
there are some examples of their appliances as well some instructions at 
"build your own" topic. Digg yourself.

Note that number of connections in milions mentioned with each 
appliance, doesn't mean milion of users.
It means that each user (client machine) will take tens of simultanous 
connections at once.
