That all sounds correct. The clients should only have access to things
through the hotspot. The hotspot doesn't need to be the main router, but it
will be the "router" for the hotspot clients.

Can you please confirm what IP range your "WAN" is on (so if you connect
directly to the router, what range does your client get?)
